Nitrates in Drinking Water May Increase Colorectal Cancer Risk

A growing body of research indicates that nitrates may have a number of negative health effects, including an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Many countries have limits set on the amount of nitrates that can be present in drinking water, but even current levels may be high enough to raise cancer risk, a new study has found.

Colorectal cancer is currently the third most common type of cancer around the world and the second biggest contributor to cancer-related deaths. High levels of nitrates in drinking water is also a global problem that is already connected to a higher risk of birth defects and other health issues.

The latest study was conducted in Denmark and found that even the current EU requirement of no more than 50 milligrams of nitrate per liter of water (50 mg/L) was associated with a higher colorectal cancer risk. Lowering the standard for nitrate to 9.25 mg/L or a stricter 3.87 mg/L could significantly cut cancer risk.

Though this specific study was conducted in Europe, nitrates are a global contaminant, including in the U.S. They often enter drinking water due to runoff from sources like conventional nitrogen fertilizers, wastewater, and landfills. Reverse osmosis filters are an effective way to remove nitrates from water. (Also, see the article ‘Healthy vs. Unhealthy Nitrates in Food: What’s the Difference?’ below ↓)

Coffee Ground Compounds Could Help Prevent Neurodegenerative Disorders

Compounds that can be extracted from spent coffee grounds – known as caffeic-acid based Carbon Quantum Dots (CACQDs) – may help to protect brain cells from the damage caused by a number of neurodegenerative diseases, some recent research has found.

To study the effects of these compounds, researchers used a “green chemistry” (i.e., environmentally friendly) extraction process. They “cooked” coffee grounds at a temperature of 200°F to allow CACQDs to form and tested them on cell lines and other models of Parkinson’s disease.

The results showed that CACQDs had neuroprotective effects across all experiments and prevented free radical damage associated with harmful brain changes. Though these findings are very preliminary, the researchers hope they will translate to the human body and help prevent Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

“Caffeic-acid based Carbon Quantum Dots have the potential to be transformative in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders,” said Jyotish Kumar, a study author. “This is because none of the current treatments resolve the diseases; they only help manage the symptoms.”

The Real Reason You Lose Muscle Mass as You Age

The average person has lost about 30% of their muscle mass by the time they hit age 60— but have you ever wondered why this happens?

As you might imagine, it has a lot to do with protein, which is a critical macronutrient for muscle health. However, muscle mass loss is NOT simply due to a lack of protein in the diet but rather to the fact that your body uses it less efficiently. You can find out exactly why this happens and how to start making protein work for (rather than against) your body in The Real Reason You're Losing Muscle Mass as You Age, and How to Stop It and Even Reverse It. This free information is written by the highly respected formulator, Dr. Frank Shallenberger, who is board certified by the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. You’ll discover the 3 specific reasons people lose so much lean body mass as they age as well as how Dr. Shallenberger recommends solving this problem and easily boosting both muscle and bone mass.

The 15 Healthiest Salad Greens Ranked From “Worst” to Best

Greens are one of the healthiest vegetables to add to your diet, but they aren’t all created equal. Iceberg lettuce comes in low on nutrient content when compared with other greens, while Romaine, butter leaf, and red leaf lettuce have a higher nutritional value. Arugula, dandelion greens, and watercress all bring flavor to your salad and are ranked somewhere towards the middle. The top three superstars are spinach, kale (no surprise there), and beet greens. Your Headache Could Be Coming From Neck Inflammation

Tension headaches are characterized by a feeling of pressure and mild to moderate pain on both sides of the head, while migraines generally occur on one side. Though headaches can have many causes, some recent research indicates that both tension headaches and migraines sometimes stem from neck inflammation. This means that getting to the root cause of neck pain or stiffness and addressing it could lead to fewer headaches in the future.  (More)

Early Coronary Heart Disease Diagnosis May Significantly Raise Dementia Risk

Coronary heart disease is usually caused by a buildup of plaque in the arteries that limits blood flow to the heart. The risk for this disease increases with age, but some new research has found that an early diagnosis (before age 45) could negatively impact brain health. Overall, a before-45 diagnosis of coronary heart disease was linked to a 36% higher risk of dementia, a 13% higher risk of Alzheimer's, and a 78% higher risk of vascular dementia.   (More)

Mindfulness Therapy May Help With Symptoms of PTSD

One in three survivors of sudden cardiac arrest develop symptoms that meet the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This is concerning because PTSD is associated with an increased risk of another heart event. However, a recent study found that a combination of  exposure (currently one of the standard therapies for PTSD) and mindfulness significantly reduced symptoms for 80% of sudden cardiac arrest survivors and could help with other forms of PTSD as well.  (More)

7 Gastritis Symptoms to Know About

Gastritis is a fairly common condition that involves the irritation and inflammation of the stomach. It can be either acute or chronic and may lead to complications if left untreated.
